I felt a hand on top of my arm and looked up to see Morvain of all people reaching out to me.

“I understand. Of course, I would have wanted Vaeren back with me, but just to know he is alive and well makes me feel so much better.”

I gave a sort of half-smile in reply before shoving another forkful of meat into my mouth. Sorry, but food was still top priority.

“And, if Vaeren is out there in a dangerous situation, I believe the System has placed him with some very capable people. I know you’ll take care of him.”

“He doesn’t have much choice…” Luca spoke up, sharing his thoughts for the first time.

“It’s fine,” I said. It wasn’t. Well, it was fine that Vaeren was allowed to live again, not so that we were now bound to share the fate of the other.

I could tell the others were unsure, maybe a little angry.

“There was no way I wasn’t getting Vaeren back,” I said, making it clear to everyone.

“We know…” Martha replied and smiled.

“It’s who you are,” she added.

I looked back at her. Did she see me in a new light? Had this worked to my advantage with regard to her feelings?

The dinner continued, but I could tell the conversation was awkward. The truth was out there, we had a new member to the group, or at least we would when I got around to officially inviting Vaeren. The risk to my life was now his, and I still had those notifications to deal with.
